Were you there for the covfefe moment? I’ve often mentioned the strategy of jumping in on trending hashtags, and the covfefe hashtag was stellar. As the Memorial Day weekend came to an end, America’s most popular Twitter account had a midnight thought that seemed to drift off to sleep during its transmission.

The President of the United States wrote: “Despite the constant negative press covfefe”… And that’s it. As expected, the internet went ballistic. Within the first hour, the covfefe tweet itself racked up 35,000 retweets and over 42,000 likes. The hashtag, #covfefe, eventually generated 3,858 unique tweets per hour, 33.58 million hashtag exposures per hour, and 11,542 retweets per hour.

Those quick to jump on the #covfefe trend had T-shirts and coffee mugs online and ready for purchase within a few hours. What did covfefe mean? For coffee shops, it was a new blend. For travel agencies, it was a vacation destination. For furniture stores, it was a new stand-up desk. All of these humorous posts under the hashtag reached one massive and engaged audience.

What could #covfefe have been for your business?

Keep your eyes on trending hashtags—it's beneficial when you catch one exploding like this one did.
