Welcome to the first article in a three-part trend series. This post dives into women’s headwear trends for the spring and summer 2018 seasons.

The first trend for the upcoming season is full of desert tones and textures. Colors become secondary to earth tones and features.

The second trend consists of patterns and designs pulled from cultures around the world. It mixes traditional materials with intricate, personalized, and rebellious pieces.

The third style involves a cross between modern nightlife and hyper-tropical influences. Pieces in this category are known to have iridescent, translucent, neon, or metallic properties.

The final trend focuses on key summer aesthetics by combining pastels and bright primary colors. Transformational textures and patterns create shifting effects.

Style and Personality

Expect soft elements like linen, lace, and simple lines, as well as laser cut patterns, perforation, and subtle embellishments like studs and reflective finishes.

Get ready to see the Dad hat in various renditions. For those that don't know, the Dad hat is an unstructured, pre-curved, six-panel cap featuring very small embellishments or hints of branding.

Anticipate heathered and patterned straws with stripes and color blocking. You’ll see lots of animal prints and skulls as well as Americana styles.

The five-panel trucker hat will be popular among the outdoorsy markets. You’ll see a lot of landscapes and patterns sublimated onto the front and visor. Ball caps and military shapes will also be significant.

Both branded camouflage and generic camo patterns will be seen with outdoor lifestyle taglines, graphics, and logos.

The foam trucker hat with mesh commands the surf and skate category. You’ll see them with both a slightly pre-curved visor and a flat visor.

Decoration Elements

As far as graphics and decoration, the warm seasons will be full of landscape art and wildlife with ethnic or tribal influences. Anchors, animal skulls, and floral graphics will be common motifs. Logos and graphics will be full of bohemian elements and circular shaped.

You’re going to see a lot of floral, palm, and animal prints, stripes and polka dots as well as generic camo with pops of color. Think bold patterns, beach graphics, and scenery, as well as city/state branding.

Get ready for bling! Jewels, rhinestones, and beading, as well as personalized monograms, make up a significant portion of the decoration elements.

Leather is going to be huge. Expect debossed and embossed patterns as well as intricate leather patches. Metal patches and multi-colored roping will also be common.

Get ready for some new innovated cap closures. Ribbon hand-tied bows will be especially popular.

Tune in for more headwear trends for the upcoming spring and summer season.
