LOS ANGELES—AST Sportswear begins textile dyeing and finishing operations at the former American Apparel facility located in Hawthorne, California. The company commenced operations at the location on April 3.
While the facility is not yet at full capacity, AST expects the plant to add approximately 120 jobs to the company’s workforce. Currently the plant employs 40 people. Abdul Rashid, chief operations officer at AST says the organization hopes to be at full capacity by the first quarter of 2018.
The news comes as AST continues to expand in the Los Angeles County area. The company bought the facility in early 2017 as American Apparel prepared to sell most of its assets. With the acquisition, AST also purchased essential machinery and equipment such as dryers, compressors, and boilers.
The 95,000 sq. ft. facility helps bring AST dyeing operations closer to home, and features automation technology to streamline production. These features include a fully-automated conveyer dryer, packaging, and palatizing systems.
