Global Organic Textile Standard Surpasses 5,000 Facilities in 2017

STUTTGART, Germany—Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) reports an increase in certified facilities for 2017. GOTS-certified facilities span the globe in 62 countries with growth in production and consuming regions.

The organization cites a jump from 4,642 facilities in 2016 to 5,024 locations in 2017, an increase of 8.2 percent. Worldwide, the list shows the highest increase in 2017 GOTS certifications in Bangladesh (40 percent), North America (39 percent), Portugal (29 percent), and Europe (29 percent). Meanwhile, India, Bangladesh, and Germany are the top three countries in terms of total number of certified facilities.

"The growing number of GOTS certifications shows that GOTS is taken as a solution for managing risks, reputation, and market differentiation,” says Claudia Kersten, GOTS Director. “We are very pleased with the development in North America. It will have the same pull effect as also seen in Europe by creating increasing capacities in the producing countries.”

The number of chemicals on the GOTS Positive List also shows an increase of 14 percent to more than 17,900 from 720 manufacturers. The list contains tradenames of approved chemicals required by textile processors for their GOTS-certified production. The organization also cites more than 1.74 million individuals working in GOTS-certified facilities as of 2017.
