GREENSBORO, N.C.—Unifi expands global manufacturing of its synthetic fiber, REPREVE. The fiber is made from synthetic materials such as used plastic bottles and transformed into textile fibers, which are used in apparel and soft-goods manufacturing. The company says it will manufacture, sell, and distribute REPREVE in Vietnam.
The Ho Chi Minh City-based Century Synthetic Fiber company heads up manufacturing of the fiber while Unifi Textiles (Suzhou) manages sales in the region. The company says the new operation aims to widen distribution channels in the region, well-known for large-scale apparel production.
“Vietnam has been a region of focus for brands and retailers over the past few years,” says Tom Caudle, president of Unifi. “The growth in the region cannot be ignored, with exports of approximately $27 billion of apparel and textiles in 2015, and expectations to grow to $30 billion in 2016.”
An expansion into Vietnam sees a continuation of Unifi’s growth in Southeast Asia. In summer 2016, the company announced a new facility in Sri Lanka. Unifi also added distribution channels in Turkey and Taiwan in late 2015.
