GREENSBORO, N.C.—Unifi announces a long-term partnership with Pac-12, a sports conference comprised of 12 U.S. universities with 513 NCAA team titles. The partnership sees Unifi joining forces with Pac-12’s sustainability initiative, Team Green.
Through the agreement, Unifi serves as the official sponsor for all Pac-12 championship events and provides grant funding to member institutions. Both organizations aim to increase efforts towards recycling and sustainability throughout university campuses in the U.S.
“At Unifi, sustainability is a core component of the work we do and who we are,” said Richard Gerstein, executive vice president of premium value-added brands and global chief marketing and innovation officer at Unifi. “While we have recycled more than 12 billion plastic bottles into REPREVE polyester products including athletic shoes and apparel, we recognize the need to create a paradigm shift in recycling rates in the U.S. to keep even more bottles out of landfills.”
Pac-12’s network includes universities in Arizona, California, Colorado, Oregon, Utah, and Washington. The conference leads multiple initiatives and events annually like the Pac-12 Sustainability Conference, the Pac-12 Zero Waste Competition, and the Pac-12 Sustainability Working Group which brings leaders from all 12 universities in athletics and sustainability.
“The Pac-12 is thrilled to launch our Pac-12 Team Green platform and also recognize Unifi as the founding partner of Team Green,” says Jamie Zaninovich, Pac-12 deputy commissioner and chief operating officer. “Unifi and the Pac-12 share a common vision for how sustainability can impact our communities, and this innovative partnership will help amplify the impressive sustainability efforts being executed by our campuses.”
Both parties unveiled the partnership at the annual Pac-12 Sustainability Conference on June 12 at the University of Colorado Boulder.
The announcement marks the newest high-profile partnership for Unifi. In April 2018 the company formed an agreement with the Wyndham Championship to serve as the official recycling partner for the professional golf tournament and educate tournament attendees on the company’s manufacturing process with its mobile tour.
